ACADEMIC CLUBS

WINGS Collective offers academic clubs to extend learning beyond the classroom. Academic clubs meet in student-directed small groups. We provide opportunities for hands-on, cross-curricular learning with individualized supports.

Social and leadership opportunities abound in our academic clubs. We provide an open space for inquiry, discussion and deep exploration of topics and context. Students are free to explore their interests in a structured environment that provides academic, language and communication supports.

Academic clubs provide students with an opportunity for increased independence and responsibility by fostering executive functioning skills. Students explore a wide variety of strategies, determine which ones work best for them, and incorporate them into individual strategy books. Strategy books are created at WINGS Collective to support planning, organizing and self-monitoring during clubs, school and homework activities.

FAQ

WHAT KIND OF STUDENT WOULD BENEFIT FROM THE ACADEMIC CLUBS?

Academic clubs are open to students in grades 3-12. Each of our current and upcoming offerings includes a recommended grade level.
We serve students who benefit from small group instruction, repeated exposure to materials, academic support, language and communication supports, and direct teaching of executive functioning skills.

IS THIS INTENSIVE ACADEMIC INTERVENTION?

We do not consider academic clubs to be intensive intervention, however, individual tutoring is one of our other offerings. Please see our Tutoring  page for more information.

HOW ARE THE CLUBS CROSS-CURRICULAR?

Academic clubs are formed by subject (math club, book club, etc.) for the purpose of distinguishing programming. The predominant activity in a book club is reading, but when we take a closer look, we see students exploring topics like science, history and current events. Students are encouraged to pursue areas of interest as they arise.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN WHEN YOU SAY "STUDENT-DIRECTED"?

Students are encouraged to pursue areas of interest as they arise. Research and digital literacy skills are directly taught to empower students to discover information for themselves instead of providing them with answers. This inquiry-based learning approach fosters critical thinking, creativity, curiosity, and ownership over learning. We believe that infusing these topics is necessary for comprehension and leads to enriched learning and conversation opportunities.

Examples of supports include audiobooks, checklists, rubrics, math visuals, and graphic organizers.

WHAT'S THE COST? WHAT IS INCLUDED?

Clubs vary in length, duration, and materials necessary. Price varies depending on the club details. The cost of each club includes all materials and instruction. For example, the cost of book club includes literacy support, the book, and any associated events including movie screening. Please see our Current & Upcoming Offerings  for more information.

"Wow! My daughter participated in the first Book Club sponsored by [WINGS Collective]. She thoroughly enjoyed attending the daily session. I never had to remind her that book club was about to start, she watched the clock. The [WINGS Collective] Book Club offered activities that helped her understand the book they were reading. If the group expanded on a current discussion, the [WINGS Collective] leader followed them as they explored, encouraging them to learn more. The group enjoyed the [WINGS Collective] Book Club to the point they asked if [they] would offer an additional Book Club the next month."
